Everybody has presented good thinking on the issue for you Bob. But don't think you are such a clutz, or at least a lonely clutz, because you aren't. We all had to start at the level you are now, and like the violinist who wants to get into Carnegie Hall, all it takes is practice, practice, practice to get your confidence.
I didn't have a choice about what I was going to ride after taking the course. Like a d---fool I bought the Savage before I took the course. Turns out I am happy with the bike, and didn't crash it right off, but did come pretty close to a curb once or twice at the beginning.
Barabara's idea of buying a little cheap bike I think is a good one, but like everyone says, plan on getting another within a short time.
